i-Tree Pest Detection

BACK

Overview

Community Tree Inventory - Pest Detection and Reporting

This initiative incorporates detection and identification of pest problems within urban and community street tree inventories. Community street tree inventories are a valuable starting point for street tree management and the incorporation of insect and disease detection can enhance these inventories by:

  • Increasing the awareness of street tree conditions and potential problems
  • Enabling opportunities for remedial or preventative management actions
  • Providing early detection of exotic pest problems

A project development team has been assembled to create, test, and implement a pest detection module for the Mobile Community Tree Inventory (MCTI) utility within the i-Tree software suite, making this valuable tool accessible to any community.

What is i-Tree?

i-Tree is a state-of-the-art, peer-reviewed software suite from the USDA Forest Service that provides urban and community forestry analysis and benefits assessment tools.
Developed by USDA Forest Service Research, State and Private Forestry, and other cooperators, i-Tree is in the public domain and available by request . The Forest Service, Davey Tree Expert Company, the National Arbor Day Foundation, and the Society of Municipal Arborists have entered into a Cooperative Partnership to disseminate and provide technical support and training for the suite.

The i-Tree suite of software tools was developed to help users—regardless of community size or technical capacity—identify and manage the structure, function, and value of urban tree populations. i-Tree allows you to promote effective urban forest management and sound arboricultural practices by providing information for advocacy & planning, baseline data for making informed decisions, and standardization for comparisons with other communities. Better understanding of benefits and services provided by trees increases investment in stewardship, operations, and maintenance.
